Welcome to Speed 101, an exploration of athletic possibilities based on experience, training, individual commitment and hard work. Located in La Habra, CA, Speed 101 is the creation of Coach Cody Verdugo, assistant defensive coordinator and speed trainer for the La Habra High School Highlanders football team. While Coach Verdugo has been with La Habra, the team made the CIF semi- finals in '00 and '02 to '05', '07 to '09; were CIF finalists in '00, '02 and '03 and CIF champs in '02, '03, '07, '08 and '09. As a former high school and college football player, Coach Verdugo knows the value of training delivered by an experienced support group. For example, Sergey Bubka, the greatest pole vaulter in history said in a 1997 speech "it is the work of a team of motivated people that has helped me develop my full potential as an athlete. The talent and determination may have always been in my blood but I will always be grateful to those people who have been with me all the time: when I lose, as well as when I win" Coach Verdugo also understands that successful training is a partnership between trainer and athlete. The trainer brings experience and knowledge. The athlete offers commitment. As Dick Vermeil, former head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs once said, "If you don’t invest very much, then defeat doesn’t hurt very much and winning is not very exciting”. It is such beliefs that inspire the staff of Speed 101 to partner with and bring out the best in every athlete in their care and to encourage them to "Invest in themselves". ______________________________________ |
