The La Habra High football team was honored – again – at City Hall on Saturday. The Highlanders captured the CIF Southwest Division championship with a 26-14 victory over Tustin on Dec. 13 at Angel Stadium. The championship was the second in a row and fourth in 10 years for the Highlanders under Coach Frank Mazzotta. There has been a city hall ceremony for each title. "It never gets old," Mazzotta said. "We have a great group of boosters and great community support for the team. There are other teams that win CIF titles and they don't get this." Among the group of about 500 supporters was La Habra Mayor Tom Beamish, along with other city and school district officials. "This is your day, this is your moment," La Habra principal Sylvia Kaufman said to the team. "Take it all in guys … you earned it." Senior quarterback Randall Nygren was celebrating his second CIF championship. "It is exciting to see the community come out and support us," said Nygren, a first-team, All-CIF selection. "It's exciting for us all." ____________________________ Coach Verdugo is justly proud of his '08 varsity team and feels fortunate to have helped train such talented athletes.
