| | La Habra Highlanders threepeat CIF champions, defeat Trabuco Hills 21-0, Dec 12, '09 at Anaheim stadium | | "La Habra fetes Highlander football team ... again" | By LOU PONSI THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Jan. 9, 2010 LA HABRA - In what La Habra High Athletic Director Frank McCarroll compared to an old-fashioned small-town show of community spirit, the city once again celebrated its football heroes. The La Habra High Highlanders, who captured their third consecutive CIF title with a 21-0 victory over Trabuco Hills on Dec.12, rode aboard fire engines Saturday from the Children's Museum at La Habra to the Community Center.
Inside, about 500 Highlander fans watched as the team received praise from several local officials and watched a slide show commemorating the championship season.
"They're just a hard-working regular group of kids who give up two and a half to three hours of their days for about 10 months a year," Highlanders' coach Frank Mazzotta said of his team.
The Highlanders have captured five CIF titles during Mazzotta's 12-year tenure (2003, 04, 07, 08 and 09) and the city has hosted a celebration each time.
The coach pointed out that the city even honored the team the year they lost the championship game. That makes six ceremonies in 12 years.
"It probably a little bit of identity for the whole city," Mazzotta said of the city's consummate support for the team. "We live and work and teach in a great community." |
